Short biography

My research areas include air quality evaluation methodologies based on the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS). I have developed several methodologies for the analysis and control of urban air quality (both indoor, outdoor and characterisation of industrial emissions). I have focused in the simultaneous evaluation of odour/nuisance episodes and assess air quality through diverse methodologies: chemical control, social participation and numeric modelling. Recently, our research group has developed a VOCs sensor station based on the activation/deactivation of samplers in nuisance/episodic pollution events using the response of a gas sensor. Hence, I am focused in continuous monitoring of VOCs in ambient air using sensors and communication through IoT. On the other hand, other fields related to the occurrence of VOCs in the atmospheric environment are also of my interest: Sick Building Syndrome, building materials’ emissions, biogenic emissions (plants and animals), exhaled air VOCs emissions to determine illnesses, soil and subsoil emissions in closed landfills, VOCs emissions from waste treatment facilities, use of filters to diminish atmospheric pollution indoors, and use of catalysts to eliminate odours and VOCs present in dwellings or outdoors.
