Joan Torras Costa

Joan Torras is a Full Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain. He holds B.S. degrees in Chemistry (UNED, 1990) and Computer Science (UPC, 2003), along with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Universitat Rovira i Virgili (1997). His international experience includes a two- year postdoctoral fellowship at the Quantum Theory Project at the University of Florida (USA), working along side Prof. Samuel B. Trickey. Since 2006, he has been a senior researcher within the Innovation in Materials and Molecular (Bio)engineering Group (IMEM).
His research bridges advanced computational modeling with experimental materials science. Currently, his work focuses on the design and development of novel functional materials for biosensors, energy conversion and storage, and sustainable water purification technologies, including solar and capacitive desalination. He has co-authored over 100 articles in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, accumulating more than 1,800 citations indexed in Scopus, with an h-index of 24 (data updated September 2026).
