Short biography

Dr. Maria M. Pérez-Madrigal is a Chemical Engineer (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC) with a PhD in Polymers and Biopolymers (2015, awarded with the “Special Doctoral Awards 2017” (year 2014-2015, Àmbit Enginyeria Industrial, UPC), currently serving as Associate Professor (Titular de Universidad) since 2025. After receiving her PhD, she carried
out a postdoctoral research stay at the University of Warwick and, later, at the University of Birmingham (2016-2020). As a research member in the IMEM group, she has secured competitive research funding, participated as PI and co-PI in research projects, and contributed to intellectual property generation.
Her current research focuses on conductive and multifunctional biomaterials for biomedical applications, integrating structural support, controlled therapeutic delivery, and sensing capabilities, with an emphasis on adaptive biointerfaces and programmable biomaterials. In parallel, she has developed a research line on microplastic capture and degradation, exploring innovative material platforms for environmental remediation.
Dr. Pérez-Madrigal has a substantial publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and has participated in numerous scientific conferences. Her scientific career has been recognized nationally and internationally on several occasions, including a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship, a Betriu de Pinós Fellowship and a Junior Galindo Fellowship (March 2021, BG20/00216), as well as receiving several awards at conferences. Her academic leadership includes the supervision and co-supervision of doctoral, postdoctoral, and undergraduate researchers, as well as contributions to scientific evaluation panels, journal peer review, and research dissemination and outreach activities.
